Philately in the Marienwerder Area
The Marienwerder administrative district, originally part of the province of West Prussia, holds a special place in postal history and philately. After World War I, it was significantly reduced in size by the Treaty of Versailles; the eastern territories remained part of the German Empire and were eventually incorporated into East Prussia.
The period of greatest historical and philatelic significance is that when Voting District Marienwerder in 1920. Prior to the referendum on July 11, 1920 (in which over 92% voted to remain part of East Prussia), the area was administered by an Inter-Allied Commission. During this period, the area issued its own postage stamps— initially Germania stamps bearing the overprint “Commission Interalliée Marienwerder,” and later issues with “PLEBISCITE / Marienwerder.”
Postmark & Postal Agencies
Collectors place particular value on postal items (official mail) from the brief period of the Referendum Territory (through September 1920), as well as on clear place and date postmarks from the region. In addition to the specialized philately of the plebiscite stamps, the field of research also encompasses 19th-century Prussian postal history and subsequent developments under the Reichspost.
- Voting tokens: Germania and Mark stamps with regional overprints by the Inter-Allied Commission (First Milan Issue, among others).
- Early Prussian Philately: Postmarks and mail routes before the founding of the German Empire in cities such as Marienwerder, Elbing, and Rosenberg.
- Rural Mail: Survey of post offices in smaller towns on the outskirts of the Vistula Valley.
Did you know?
"The Marienwerder postal district, due to its location between the emerging Poland, East Prussia, and the Free City of Danzig, was extremely significant for the transit mail of that time—the overprinted stamps reflect this brief, turbulent era."
