The Postal History of Pomerania and the Border Region

Pomerania, with its extensive Baltic Sea coastline and its historic border region extending deep into the interior, offers a wide range of post-historical activities thanks to its eventful history.

From the magnificent Prussian stagecoach routes and rural post offices to the seaside resort post offices along the Baltic Sea coast: The postal system impressively reflects the flourishing economic and social development of this region.

Historical Developments and Postal Aspects

  • Pre-Philately & Old German States: The delivery of letters in the pre-stamp era, as well as their later integration into the Prussian postal system with numeric and frame postmarks.

Did you know?

"The seaside resorts along the Pomeranian Baltic coast had their own seasonal post offices. Postmarks from places like Swinemünde or Kolberg during the high season are now among the most appealing areas of interest for collectors in the region."

  • The Development of the Railroad Mail Service: The expansion of the rail network in the 19th century gave rise to special railway postmarks, which are a significant collectible in the region.
  • The Seaside Resort Post: The seasonal post offices and postmarks of the Pomeranian Baltic Sea resorts (e.g., Swinemünde, Kolberg) constitute a philatelically very interesting subject.
  • Border Mark of Posen-West Prussia (1922–1938): A historically unique structure that, in post-historical terms, spans only a relatively short—but all the more fascinating— period, complete with specific routes.

The mission of our working group is to document the postal history of all rural and urban districts in Pomerania, as well as the Borderlands. Through the digitization and cataloging of preserved documents, types of postmarks, and postal regulations, an increasingly comprehensive picture of this region rich in tradition is emerging.

Our Research Group's Main Areas of Focus

Within our working group, specialized collectors and researchers are dedicated to the detailed documentation of all post offices in Pomerania and the Grenzmark. This includes cataloging the types of postmarks used, postage rates, postal routes, and special features such as censored mail, field post, and railway post within this regional context.

The results of our research are regularly published in the newsletters of the working group and provide a solid foundation for the transfer of knowledge between experts and new collectors.

Get actively involved: Please help us complete the cataloging of postmarks and postal connections in East and West Prussia.
