The Post-Historical Reference Work on East Prussia
The directory of localities compiled by Hans-Jürgen Vogelsang “The Post Offices of East Prussia, 1850–1945” It is regarded by local history collectors and postal historians as the indispensable standard work on the postal history of Prussia and the German Empire.
Through meticulous research spanning decades, based on official gazettes, district records, and postal records, Vogelsang has reconstructed the development of the postal system in all 39 East Prussian districts and urban districts. For each individual locality, the book records opening dates, information on postal agencies or post offices (PSt I and II), closures, and the numerous historically and politically motivated name changes (particularly the renamings of 1938).
The Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutsche Ostgebiete e.V. is making this extensive reference work available here in fully digitized form, organized by district and featuring modern full-text and keyword search capabilities for researchers and association members.
